LUNCH WITH WRITER DAVID LIDA, SAN MIGUEL DESIGNS & FUSION
Today was a great day. I went to Parque México for FUSION. FUSION is bazaar of art and design with lots of creative handmade clothing, t-shirts, shoes, well, lots of cool stuff. A real bohemian artistic sale. But first …
On my way to Parque México I had to walk through Parque España. While walking through España I saw my two lovely lady friends, Reina and Gloria sitting on a bench, watching the world go by. I stopped and chitchatted awhile because I always enjoy talking to these two lovely ladies. I can always find those two at Parque España people watching and having fun friendly conversations. Reina is 90 years old and is from México City, so she has a lot of astonishing tales. Gloria is from Spain and she came to México City when she was 14 years old with her family to flee Franco the undisputed dictator of Spain.
I always try to carry a camera to document so when the asked me why I wanted a picture I told them it was a test shoot for Playboy, and they just giggled – and so did I. Fun ladies.
FUSION was fun. Got to see some lovely one of a kind artistic designs but afterwards I went to have a late lunch (4:00 PM).
I had lunch with David Lida, a writer based out of México City and a friend of his, Patrice Wynne. Lida just wrote another book titled, “First Stop in the New World: Mexico City, the Capital of the 21st Century,” which by the way has gotten great reviews all over the U.S.A. I had looked up Lida on the Internet and wrote him about his book. I was shocked that he responded, which really made me feel special. And now I was having lunch with him, how cool is that? Well extremely Cool.
I bought Lida’s book and I just finished reading it when I asked him to sign it for me AND he said OK. It was great having lunch and drinking red wine with Lida talking about his book and being at this fabulous sidewalk café he had suggested called No Solo Panino, across from Plaza Luis Cabrera in Col. Rom. Great lunch and great conversations with Lida and his friend Wynne.
Lida’s book, “First Stop in the New World” is a great read. If you love México or just want to know about México beyond a travel guide, buy his book. You will find it informative, entertaining and well written.
Meeting Patrice Wynne, Lida’s friend, was a an extra treat. She is exciting and full of enthusiasm – great energy. Turns out Wynne had a space at FUSION too because she is the Founder/Creator of San Miguel Designs. She told me what she sold and I knew exactly what she was talking about because I found her clothing design at FUSION to be original and electrifying – especially the clothing with the Day of the Dead motifs.
After lunch Lida went on his way and I joined Patrice Wynne. We took a taxi back to Parque México where I was able to shoot her fun clothing design.
It was a great day in Mexico City and with some wonderful people.
