MY VISIT TO SAN MIGUEL de ALLENDE

2008 December 9

Well I got away from the apartment hunting in México City for a week and traveled to San Miguel de Allende and San Luz de La Paz where I visited with friends that also used to live in Dallas. Both are lovely places to getaway to write, but I prefer big city life adventures though.

I took the ETN bus to San Miguel de Allende. The bus is first class with roomy seats AND free wireless Internet! It was really fun to be traveling in México’s rural county sides of desert and cactus and to be surfing on the Internet; and ON A BUS at that!

San Miguel de Allende is beautiful and has been designed a Unesco World Heritage site, because if its colonial charm. But because of all the retired Americans living in San Miguel I heard too much English spoken there, even when I was not looking for it. Though I enjoy StarBucks a lot in a big city life circumstances I found it a little strange to find a StarBucks in a 16th-century colonial Mexican building, full of Americans on their notebook computers surfing the Internet. My observations are nothing new were written about in an article in the New York Times: The New Old México: … “San Miguel these days: balancing in a moment of almost exquisite equilibrium between new and old.

I enjoyed my stay with my friend John Williams. Loved to finally meet his mother that had her 90th birthday on December 3rd. He was a most wonderful host and he has a great home and it was so relieving to get away from the big city and my crowded apartment in México City.

The fun part of my last day in San Miguel was on this Sunday afternoon, I ran into a bunch of dancers in the street. These were not indigenous feathered dancers or ballet folkloric dancers BUT people of various ages dressed in various costumes. It looked like if the Disney Channel had exploded and all the characters were dancing, happy to be free – released out of TV land. I never know what all the dancing was about, but it was fun. Two characters I most enjoyed seeing were two people masked at Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and President-elect Barack Obama.

After all this, it was time to go to San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato.

And by the way I have a blog, I just haven’t used it in 4 or 5 years, so I can’t remember what my user name is. I just remember the password.
