EARTH HOUR IN MEXICO CITY

2009 March 31
by Jesus

I participated in Earth Hour – the worldwide event to call attention to climate change – here in México City, Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 pm.

While running around on Saturday I noted several groups of teenagers in various parts of the city advertising the event Apaga la Luz – Turn off your lights. I thought was super cool – youth concerned about their future and the environment; see photo below.

My neighbor Mely invited me to her place to participate in Earth Hour so off I went. We sat on the big balcony of Mely’s home, a balcony that overlooks the park Alameda Santa Maria la Ribera. We (Mely, Vilma, Akinchana and myself) lit candles, had wonderful conversations, drank red wine, had various cheeses and breads to eat.

The best part was when Mely’s nephew, Akinchana read his poetry; I had no idea he was a talented poet too. Akinchana not only writes well but also gets really emotional in his readings, sometimes having tears as he reads.

It was a great hour. The ladies later went to sleep while I and Akinchana and stayed up talking until 3 am.

AND the event was a global success: Click here for a news item.
