SWINE FLU & EARTHQUAKES – WHAT NEXT?
I have been busy running around seeing friends, hanging out, going to the movies to be able to post lately. I am posting more on FaceBook (find me there using ChairezStudio [at] gmail.com).
First off I keep getting e-mails wondering if I am OK. Yes. I am fine and no flu and no falling buildings on my head – YET.
The Swine Flu is scary. It is so surreal to see all the people wearing facemasks about town. I don’t have a TV or read the Spanish newspapers so I was not aware of the flu until I got into the subway, El Metro, and noted all the masked people. I knew something was happening so I got the English newspaper and BOOM – the flu. Schools and colleges closed and also my favorite cantina.
I tried to find a facemask but everywhere I went, they were out. Then on Sunday as I was driving and getting on the freeway I noted Mexican soldiers handing out facemasks to drivers. It looked like a McDonald’s drive through, but I got in line and was given several masks to wear.
This morning as I was going out, I put one of the facemasks and it smelled like garlic. Funny how could that be I wondered? Then I remember that I had carried the facemasks in the same bag where I had carried my garlic I bought from a street vendor. Wearing the facemasks is horrible: They are too warm because of your breath and when I put my glasses on they fog up. AND if you forget to brush your teeth in the morning, you will know it; not that I did.
Being that I wanted to avoid crowds on the subway and bus, I drove today. I was playing my music sort of loud having a good time when I noted lots of people outside of office towers. I thought it strange and later realized that México had had an earthquake, not a little one, but one that was like a 6.0 and was centered near Chilpancingo, about 130 miles southwest of Mexico City or 50 miles from Acapulco.
It shook up the city but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. WOW: Here I was driving my car with the music up loud; being glamour’s and I did NOT feel a thing. LOL. An earthquake of 6.0 multitude hit México and I did not have clue!
These three guys pictured I ran into in the Zona Rosa and they seem to have a good attitude about wearing facemasks.

Love your attitude. Keep on smiling!
People are into the facemasks here in Mazatlan, too, even though there have been no suspected cases. Seems strange to me.
Thanks Nancy. Nothing I can do about the situation but to keep moving on, with a smile.
My pics made the LA Times’ La Plaza. Check it out: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laplaza/2009/04/face-mask-fun-in-mexico-city.html
Congrats on making the LA Times’ La Plaza, I really like the first facemask pic. Thanks for the nice comments also :)
