Every 28th of the month there is a BIG religious ceremony to St. Jude (San Judas Tadeo) at his church in Centro Historico; across from the Alameda Park. I have gone to look around on a 28th of the month before BUT on October 28th is the birthday feast day to San Judas and I was there!  In fact I was there the evening before at 11:30 PM to see all the people coming in to give thanks for miracles performed and to pray to the saint.  The place was packed, triple the size of a normal 28th of the month.

San Judas Tadeo the saint of hopeless causes with many thieves and drug people praying to St. Jude. So most people in attendance around the church were people that looked like Daddy Yankee wannabes and people full of tattoos; some obvious prison art tattoos too. The stench of marijuana and glue was at times overwhelming. Yes, people getting high after prayer or before, hard to tell.

So many criminals pray to St. Jude that the Archdiocese of Mexico issued a statement in November 2008 clarifying that St. Jude Thaddeus is not the “patron saint” of criminals or drug lords but apparently these people don’t know that.

I will let the pictures express what I saw, click any picture to view a slide show.

and here is short video that I shot at the feast day.

How to find the churchThe church Iglesia de San Hipólito (also known as San Judas Tadeo), is on the corner of Paseo de la Reforma y Avenida Hidalgo, caddy-corner from the park Alameda Central where the Centro Cultural Jose Marti sits.  Every 28th of the month thousands of worshipers gather to pay homage to San Judas – it is packed.  Then on the 28th of October is the feast day, so expect more people.

Amazing images. Interesting to see so much of the ancient Indian culture expressed.
